Fri 13-Aug-04
Olympic Games start at Athens. Spectacular opening ceremony with a lake in
the main arena!
Sat 14-Aug-04
Dhananjoy Chatterjee, rapist and killer of
schoolgirl Hetal Parekh of Calcutta hanged in the Alipore Central Jail at 4:30
AM. His case had galvanized India for and against capital punishment. His last
words were I am innocent. May god bless you. None of the jail officials
including the executioner Nata Mallick was dry eyed. Nata even asked his
forgiveness on bent knees before pulling the lever.
Sunday 15-Aug-2004
India's 58th Independence Day. Went to attend the NCLCL function at the
Rotary Sadan this morning. Excellent programme by children of the cultural
section. An imaginary RCC Channel on TV - with announcers, news, programmes and
even 'advertisement' breaks.
Start this Web-Diary.
Mon 16-Aug-04
Getting up at 5:30 am. Bring out WNC 1700 from garage and park in front of
house. Promptly lie down in mother's room for a 20-munute nap.
Tue 17-Aug
Long stretches of city, including Ashutosh Mukherjee Road in front of
Southern Medical Centre dig up for laying of huge water pipes. Kolkata should be
awash with filtered water soon. Must thank Trinamul Congress Mayor Subrata
Mukherjee for getting this done.
Sun 29-Aug: 11 am
City Center Super Market in Salt Lake.
Our first glimpse. Short direct drive along Maniktala Main Road. Suman showed me
and Sukla the way (Ayan preferred to stay back at home). Huge glistening
courtyards, ample parking place (R10 for 4 hours) huge store houses - reminded
us of UK's shopping plazas.
Visited C3 Superstore bursting with provisions.
Inox (Multiplex) and Shopper's Stop (clothing) remained for another day.
