Nagendra Prasad Sarbadhikary
Sportsman, cricketer, father of Indian Football
Born 1869 (22 Sraban 1276) Died 1940 Jan 17
However 40 years before Gandhi and Ambedkar in this very city of Calcutta
in 1881 a player from the lower caste, one Moni Das, son of a potter forced
his way into an upper caste Hindu team. This was a very significant event
in that age.
Nagendra Prasad Sarbadhikary, who is now known as the father of
Indian football, formed a series of sporting clubs in the 1880s, one of the
first being the Wellington. This Moni Das was one of the first members to
be inducted by Nagendra Prasad to the Wellington club, but soon after, the other
members of the club protested about playing with this man from the lower caste.
Sarbadhikary saying that a sporting ground is beyond any prejudice was
however forced by the members' protest and the intrigues behind his back
to dismantle the Wellington Club in 1883.
Soon after, 500 members left and Nagendra
Prasad founded the
Sovabazar Club, one of the leading sports institutions of colonial India.
The first member of this new club was Moni Das. He later captained the
Mohan Bagan Club, yet another legendry institution of sports in India,
colonial and post colonial. Thus a man from the lower caste, through
cricketing prowess and sport broke into the upper echelons of the Hindu society.
